Watson is a supercomputer and is famous for his success in beating humans on a US television quiz show Jeopardy in 2011. Recently, IBM issued a statement: Watson will be open to developers in 2014. By then, Watson will allow programmers to write their own applications on this supercomputer's database through open platforms and APIs.
It is understood that Watson is composed of 90 IBM servers and 360 computer chip drivers. With 15TB of memory, 2880 processors, and at least 80 trillion operations per second, Watson is considered to be the first machine in the third computer era. IBM internally called it cognitive computing, heralding the arrival of a truly artificial intelligence era.
The API is also very simple. Developers can access Watson's natural language query engine and get the corresponding answer in the Watson database online. IBM will also develop a content store for customers, upload and download knowledge databases ready for use on Watson so that they can develop autonomous or other applications for specific areas.
It is understood that the initial API project includes customers such as health care software developer Welltok, digital business consulting company Fluid, MD Buyline, and a company that provides medical device purchase advice for hospitals and healthcare systems. MD Buyline will release the first Hippocrates application developed by Watson next year. This application will help medical and financial users make real-time decisions.
IBM recently released a prototype of a Waston-based medical application to show people what applications based on Watson will look like. The application runs on a tablet computer, where doctors can access the patient's electronic files and provide advice to Waston in diagnosing patients.
Although the opening plan was not the first time that Watson wanted to open up to the public, it was the first time that it was fully open, allowing developers to freely control. It will play an important role in the future development of computers.
