Analysis and protection measures of embedded system security problems

In February, Sony's marketing department representative Kevin Butler forwarded "@TheKevinButler Lemme guess... you sank my Battleship? RT @exiva: 46 DC ... C2 Come at me, @TheKevinButler" message, Sony unintentionally announced its PlayStaTIon3 The master signing key is now visible and usable around the world. Two months later, we learned that developer James Laird unveiled Apple AirPort Express's personal key through a large number of dumped read-only memory (ROM) content cracks. This is just two concrete examples of long-term major security breaches, which have caused embarrassment and loss to many people. Security information is threatened, and we naturally have to ask: "If giants like Apple and Sony can't protect the security of their embedded systems, what should I do?"

Ensuring the security of an embedded system can be a daunting task. The first thing to do first is to clearly understand the following basic security issues:

●What do you want to protect?

● Who is the target of the protection work?

●What are the costs of the information you protect if it is compromised?

Only by answering these questions in depth can developers better customize security solutions for their system-specific needs. After identifying the protected object, you must also identify the following issues:

● Which software or data must be kept confidential?

● Which communication channels must be secured?

● Do you allow third-party applications?

Hackers are not omnipotent. They are high-intelligence individuals and groups with sufficient time and resources and clear goals. By understanding the intent and goals of hackers, developers can not only pool resources to protect devices from damage, but also transfer non-authorized (such as self-taught developers at home) into risk. This not only reduces the cost of the solution, but also improves system robustness.

Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of how to ensure the security of an embedded system. The system needs to protect the power supply measurement and its measurement communication functions for the operator, while avoiding attempts to steal electricity. If the instrument is destroyed, it may lead to a significant increase in company costs. As with many embedded systems, the end user's home or work location helps the vandals to unfettered unprotected hardware and software.

Developers can use the following security tools to provide complete protection for this embedded system:

● Ensure that the software running on the meter is highly trusted: confirm that the secure boot function is booted from a hardware-based trusted root directory and uses authentication algorithms such as RSA 2048/4096 or elliptic curve encryption;

● Protect the debug port and only allow the authentication service technician to access the meter: the device is used to ensure that the operator can only open a certain system, and cannot use a unified global password;

● Integrated tamper-proof protection function, can return reports to operators: tamper-proof function can actively monitor the system and make appropriate response decisions according to different events.

As security threats increase and technology continues to expand into key markets such as medical devices, security has become a requirement for many embedded systems. Fortunately, developers are now able to protect both hardware and software, and this capability will be further enhanced with the promotion of the company's product technology. Developers understand how to deal with basic security issues, not only to create highly robust, secure embedded systems, but also to meet future security needs.
