It is reported that quantum computing is driving a new technological revolution, potentially boosting human society's computational power by hundreds of thousands or even millions of times. As part of Alibaba's "NASA Program," quantum computing has become a key focus for the newly announced "Dharma Institute." At the 2017 Alibaba Yunqi Conference in Hangzhou, Alibaba Cloud and the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced their collaboration to launch a quantum computing cloud platform.
The platform features a quantum computing system architecture and a development environment for quantum algorithms. In July 2015, Alibaba Cloud and the Chinese Academy of Sciences established the Quantum Computing Laboratory to work together on developing quantum computers. This initiative is part of Alibaba’s broader vision to explore next-generation technologies.
Pan Jianwei, a leading figure in Chinese quantum mechanics, expressed his goal of achieving a 50-qubit quantum computer by next year and scaling up to hundreds of qubits within the next decade. He believes that in specific fields, the computing power could reach one million times that of current systems.
Quantum computers operate based on the principles of quantum superposition and entanglement, offering unparalleled parallel processing and simulation capabilities. To illustrate the difference, someone once compared traditional computers to bicycles and quantum computers to airplanes. For instance, solving a system with billions of variables using the world’s fastest supercomputer, "Tianhe II," would take about 100 years. With a quantum computer capable of trillions of operations, the same task would take just 0.01 seconds. This revolutionary potential highlights the transformative impact quantum computing could have on science, finance, and more.
