A photoresistor, also known as a light-dependent resistor (LDR), is an electronic component that detects optical signals using the semiconductor photoconductive effect. It can be made from various forms of semiconductor materials, such as single-crystal sheets, polycrystalline sheets, sintered films, vacuum-evaporated layers, chemically deposited films, or sputtered films. These devices are widely used in applications where light intensity needs to be measured or controlled. The structure and wiring diagram of a photoresistor are illustrated in Figure 9-2. When exposed to light, the internal photoelectric effect increases the conduction capability of the material, causing its resistance to decrease. As a result, the current through the load resistor RL and the voltage across it will change accordingly. The stronger the light, the lower the resistance and the higher the current. Once the light is removed, the resistance returns to its original state. If connected in a closed circuit, the photoresistor allows the current in the loop to be adjusted by varying the light intensity, effectively converting optical signals into electrical signals. This makes them useful in a wide range of applications, including automatic lighting control, camera light meters, and security systems. Common photo-sensitive semiconductor materials include silicon, germanium, cadmium sulfide, lead sulfide, indium antimonide, and cadmium selenide. Pure semiconductors without inherent luminescent properties can be doped with impurities to enhance their photoelectric response. Materials like cadmium sulfide, lead sulfide, antimony sulfide, cadmium selenide, and lead telluride are often used for this purpose. The performance of a photoresistor depends on several factors, such as dark current, photocurrent, volt-ampere characteristics, illumination response, spectral sensitivity, frequency response, temperature stability, sensitivity, time constant, and optimal operating voltage. Understanding these parameters is essential for selecting the right photoresistor for specific applications.
