Amazon, which operates some of the world's largest data centers, has indicated that the pace of innovation from chip manufacturers using ARM technology is not keeping up with Intel. As a result, Amazon is not yet ready to replace its server chip vendors. James Hamilton, vice president of Amazon Web Services (AWS), made these remarks. AWS is Amazon’s cloud computing division, offering cloud computing and storage services to businesses worldwide. According to Hamilton, the rate of R&D progress in ARM chip technology is still insufficient. An ARM spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
For companies like AMD and Applied Micro Circuits Corp., aiming to challenge Intel’s dominance in the server processor market, securing orders from major players like AWS is crucial. These companies argue that Intel’s 98% market share forces customers to pay higher prices, and they believe there is a strong need for alternative solutions.
However, Hamilton also mentioned that AWS remains open to collaboration with ARM-based chipmakers. In addition, Amazon is increasing its hiring of semiconductor engineers to enhance its technical capabilities. Many data center operators that build their own servers are looking for more efficient components rather than just lower prices. In fact, operational costs in data centers have now surpassed equipment costs. Hamilton stated that it is not currently cost-effective to replace Intel’s chips, and he emphasized that Amazon and Intel are working together more smoothly than ever before.
This year, ARM's stock has dropped by 20%, raising questions about its long-term viability in the server market. Despite this, Amazon’s cautious approach reflects a balance between innovation and stability in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.
