CMD Introduces CM1771 for HBLED Static Protection

Recently, CMD announced the release of LuxGuard, the latest in the series of electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection and thermal management solutions for high-power, high-brightness light-emitting diode (HBLED) lighting applications. The latest CM1771 is the industry's first ESD protection solution with a 100 volt breakdown voltage for HBLED applications. This enhanced type of high-power HBLED lighting application (having high output power, high efficiency over 120 lumens per watt) or those using multiple HBLEDs in a serial arrangement requires this enhanced electrostatic discharge protection. Providing ESD protection at high operating voltages presents a new challenge of dissipating higher levels of power during electrostatic discharge shocks and maintaining acceptable low dynamic clamping voltages. The LuxGuardCM1771 is a silicon-based side mount protection solution with continuous electrical structure that provides strong uniform ESD protection and a cost-effective die that can be easily integrated into a wide range of applications. HBLED light module.

The growing high-power HBLED market The high-power HBLED market has broken through traditional market segments such as state and alpha-digital displays to expand into a wider range of lighting applications, including display backlighting, automotive, signage, and home and commercial lighting. Market research firm iSuppli expects the HBLED market to grow from $1.5 billion in 2009 to $3.8 billion in 2012, with a CAGR of 47%. Many of these segments, such as display backlighting and home and Commercial lighting is taking advantage of the design advantages of multiple high-power HBLEDs in a serial configuration (typically up to 30 to 40 HBLEDs per string) to increase brightness. Existing side-mount devices for HBLEDs Electrostatic discharge protection solutions provide breakdown voltages below 50 volts, making them a single-chip solution for these higher power and multiple HBLED applications.

CM1771 Specification The CM1771 is the industry's first ESD protection solution for high power HBLED applications with a breakdown voltage of 100 volts. Important specifications include:

1. Continuous Zener breakdown diode configuration for bidirectional ESD protection 2. Safe dissipation of at least 6kV Human BodyModel (Human Body Model, "HBM") Electrostatic discharge shock 3.100 volt breakdown voltage (typical) 4. Top layer composition: Gold 5. Compact flip chip package pricing and marketed samples will be available in October 2009, and volume production is scheduled for the first quarter of 2010. The sample is ordered from a wafer and the order price is $0.05 per piece.
