Electric cars account for about 1% of global car sales

When the sales of electric vehicles still need help, the introduction of electric SUVs is a good move for car manufacturers.

For the first time in August, Auto Magazine reported that BMW is working on a project called Project iNext: the German automaker promised to launch an all-electric car with autopilot in 2021. When Autocar first reported on the Project iNext car last Monday, it said it would be an electric SUV.

Autocar quoted insiders as saying that BMW has already defined the SUV body style for its next i-series model, which makes it easier to adapt to the size of the battery pack without having to be limited by the limited space of the car or hatchback. At the same time, BMW has made the above choice based on the market's growing demand for SUVs and higher profits than hatchbacks.

Ian Robertson, BMW's head of sales and marketing, said: "The electric car market is an emerging market, but we have the confidence to believe that consumers understand this trend. In addition, 80% of the i-series customers are the first. Buy BMW."

But Robertson is not willing to comment on whether Project iNext is an SUV.

According to the Automotive Magazine, BMW's Project iNext will support fully automated driving by 2025.

BMW said it will release autonomous vehicles in China in 2021. The company is working with Mobileye, the machine vision provider before Tesla Autopilot and Intel to develop autonomous vehicles. According to the report of the connection, BMW is also working on a project to use a driverless vehicle to share.

Bloomberg reported in September that BMW hopes to launch the first electric version of the Mini in 2019, followed by the electric version of the X3 in 2020.

BMW is not the only car manufacturer that wants to enter the electric vehicle field with SUV models.

At the Paris Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz announced a high-profile concept of their electric SUV, EQ, and plans to release a production version in 2019.

Both Audi and Hyundai are also planning to release all-electric SUVs in 2018. Volkswagen plans to launch five electric cars by 2020, and it is likely that at least one of them will be a crossover or SUV. Volvo's goal is to provide at least two all-electric vehicles to the market in 2019, one of which is expected to be a crossover or SUV.

Tesla also plans to release an electric SUV, Model Y (following Model X). Chevrolet's all-electric SUV crossover version, Bolt, will meet dealers before the end of the year.

When the sales of electric vehicles still need help, the introduction of electric SUVs is a good move for car manufacturers. Sales of small passenger vehicles around the world continue to decline, while sales of pickup trucks and SUVs are good.

At present, electric vehicles account for about 1% of global car sales. Therefore, with the hot selling momentum of SUVs, automakers are likely to trigger greater consumer demand for electric vehicles.
