HTC new mid-end U11 Life exposure: Chin quite touching

[PConline News] Over the past five to six years, HTC's smartphone business has been in a steady decline, and it's now on the brink of collapse. According to the latest global smartphone market ranking released by IDC on September 20th, HTC's market share dropped to just 0.68%, pushing it out of the top 10 worldwide. Once a leading force in the smartphone industry, HTC has struggled for years, facing increasing challenges and embarrassment in the market.

Recently, both Google and HTC announced that some members of HTC's Mobile Devices Division, reportedly including key Pixel R&D staff, will join Google's hardware team. Under a $1.1 billion deal, Google will gain access to some non-exclusive intellectual property from HTC, while the company will retain its own mobile phone brand and certain R&D teams. This means HTC smartphones will still be around, but how long it will take for the company to regain its former glory remains uncertain.

In many ways, it makes sense for HTC to sell off parts of its business, especially in the smartphone sector, where the market is no longer promising. On one hand, this move could help reduce financial pressure and prevent further losses. On the other hand, the funds could be reinvested into more promising areas of growth.

Interestingly, HTC seems to have given up on its own smartphone business.

According to foreign reports, HTC is set to launch the HTC U11 Life, a mid-range model, on November 2nd. From the leaked renderings, the device looks very similar to the previous HTC A9, featuring a sleek design with a 5.2-inch screen. However, one notable feature is an unusually wide chin that seems almost comically disproportionate.

In terms of specifications, the HTC U11 Life is expected to come with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor, paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage. It will also feature 16-megapixel front and rear cameras, along with a 2600mAh battery. The exact price hasn't been announced yet, but some media speculate it could be around $400 (approximately RMB 2,650). If this is accurate, the phone may struggle to find a place in the competitive Chinese market.
