During the past few weeks, I had the opportunity to work with both Schneider and Delta E series inverters, experimenting with multi-speed control. Today, I’d like to share what I learned from these tests. Let’s start with the Schneider inverter, specifically the ATV32 series, which is commonly used for such applications.

The key to multi-speed operation lies in how we set up the digital inputs. Typically, LI1 is used for forward rotation, LI2 for reverse, and then LI3, LI4, and LI5 are used for different speed settings. The parameters involved are usually PSS-SP2, PSS-SP3, etc., depending on the number of speeds required.

In a basic setup where only two speeds are needed, we can use just one channel—LI3. When LI3 is at a low level (0), it activates the low speed, which is determined by the LSP parameter. When LI3 is high (1), typically controlled by a PLC output (like KA coil), the inverter switches to high speed.

If we need more speeds—say three or four—we can use two channels: LI3 and LI4. This works similarly to binary logic. For example:

  • LI4 = 0, LI3 = 0 → Low speed
  • LI4 = 0, LI3 = 1 → Speed 2 (SP2)
  • LI4 = 1, LI3 = 0 → Speed 3 (SP3)
  • LI4 = 1, LI3 = 1 → Speed 4 (SP4)

This method allows for up to 16 different speed settings using multiple input combinations. It's quite powerful when you think about how flexible this can make your system.

It's fascinating how such simple configurations can lead to complex and efficient control systems. Today, I’ve covered the basics of the Schneider inverter. In the next session, I’ll go into detail about the Delta E series and how it compares. If there's anything I missed or got wrong, feel free to point it out—I'm always learning too!
