A highly reliable, precise, user-friendly, and easily maintainable frequency measurement system has been developed and proposed for use in the field of power electronics. The system employs an embedded PC104 computer as the core platform for measurement and control, while LabWindows/CVI serves as the software development environment. The system uses a measurement cycle method, selecting different reference frequencies based on the input signal's frequency. Testing results have confirmed that the system meets high accuracy and real-time requirements, offering efficient detection capabilities that are easy to operate and maintain. This system can also be applied in other fields requiring high-precision frequency measurements.
In the field of power electronics, frequency is a fundamental physical quantity, and its accurate measurement is crucial for engineering applications. Traditional methods often rely on microcontrollers or programmable logic devices. However, in harsh environments where high accuracy and reliability are required, conventional solutions may fall short or become too costly. To address this, this paper presents a frequency measurement system based on the PC104 measurement and control computer. By selecting appropriate reference frequencies based on the measured signal, the system achieves a measurement accuracy of 0.2% and supports simultaneous measurement of multiple signals.
The overall design of the system is based on the measurement cycle method. The frequency of an alternating signal is defined as the number of cycles per unit time, fx = N/t. Two main approaches exist: the frequency measurement method, which counts the number of cycles within a fixed time interval, and the period measurement method, which measures the time between cycles using a standard frequency. Each method has its own error characteristics, with the former being more accurate for high-frequency signals and the latter for low-frequency ones. This system adopts the measurement cycle method, utilizing the PC104 platform for signal conditioning, data processing, and display.
The hardware design incorporates the PC104 computer along with modules such as DMM-32X-AT, OMM-XT, and GPIO-MM-XT, enabling the simultaneous measurement of multiple frequency signals. These modules offer compact size, low power consumption, wide temperature tolerance, and high reliability, making them suitable for challenging environments. Signal conditioning includes filtering, amplification, and shaping to ensure accurate input for the PC104-based system.
To improve measurement accuracy and accommodate unknown duty cycles, the system divides the input signal so that the measurement duration is an integer multiple of the signal’s period. Different frequency division coefficients are used depending on the signal’s frequency range, enhancing precision for both high and low-frequency signals.
On the software side, LabWindows/CVI is used for development, providing tools for data acquisition, analysis, and visualization.
