Global PC growth was weak at the end of last year

Due to the increasing consumer interest in touch-screen tablet PCs, the market share of traditional PCs is further eroded.

Recently, the global PC market report released by global market research companies IDC and Gartner also showed that in the fourth quarter of 2010, global PC market sales only showed lower single-digit growth, and the increase was lower than expected. PC shipments were 93.5 million units and 92.1 million units, respectively, representing a year-on-year increase of 2.7% and 3.1%.

Q4 Global PC "failure to consume"

According to IDC data, global PC shipments in the fourth quarter of 2010 increased by 2.7% year-on-year, well below the company's previous forecast of 5.5%. According to Gartner's data, global PC shipments in the fourth quarter of last year increased by 3.1% year-on-year, which is lower than the company's previous forecast of 4.8%. Hewlett-Packard ranked first in selling 572 million computers, and Dell ranked second in selling 4.37 million computers. Other PC vendors sold 4.43 million computers.

Analysts pointed out that of the top five global manufacturers in 2010, only Lenovo and Toshiba's annual market growth rate exceeded the PC market's average annual growth rate.

Gartner chief analyst Kitagawa Mikako said: "Because of the increasingly fierce competition for consumer spending, PC sales have been weak in many major regions during the Christmas holidays. iPads and other tablet PCs have competed with traditional PCs."

IDC pointed out that the world's number one HP in the fourth quarter of the United States faced great challenges, sales fell 5.3% year-on-year. The Gartner data show that the biggest loss in the fourth quarter is the macro? In the fourth quarter, the company's US market shipments fell by more than 30% year-on-year, because the company's previous sales growth was mainly from netbooks, and such products are currently facing the most direct market competition for tablet PCs.

In response, analysts said that with the emergence of a new batch of flat-panel products such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab, tablet PCs will continue to impact the traditional PC market in 2011. Therefore, many PC manufacturers hope to be able to spend the first half of 2011 smoothly and do not expect rapid growth.

As PCs and PC parts companies heat up, the related areas of the traditional PC industry are also affected more and more.

"First of all, mechanical hard drives are the most important." Taiwan's executives of a well-known hard disk company admit that the sales of mechanical hard drives have been severely affected by the increasing use of solid-state drives as storage units for tablet computers. "In 2010, tablet PCs sold more than 17 million units, which directly led to the decline in sales of notebook computers, which resulted in a significant reduction in shipments of mechanical hard drives."

In addition, industry sources said that in addition to mechanical hard drives, memory companies have not been spared. A few days ago, the person in charge of the memory production company Transcend Technology was interviewed by an Information Times reporter and said that the current status of excess memory production cannot be completely attributed to suppliers. The fact that more and more consumers use tablet computers has become an indisputable fact. As the number of tablet products increases, the demand for memory chips will further decrease. Correspondingly, the demand for RAM used by mobile devices continues to grow.

“In the face of the decline in the traditional PC market, storage companies such as memory drives cannot influence market demand. They can only change their business strategies to comply with the market. OCZ (memory and IT equipment R&D manufacturers) is an extreme example. Early starting to put down the memory business, the SSD will become the focus.” The analysts frankly stated that with the acceleration of the tablet PC, there will be a more serious impact on the related areas of the traditional PC industry.
