Japan's eight power companies have worsened earnings

According to reports, the nuclear accident after the Great East Japan Earthquake brought chaos to Japan’s nuclear power policy, and the power company’s operation was difficult. Data released by Japan's nine major power companies outside Tokyo Electric Power on the 31st showed that since Japan closed down some of its nuclear power plants and switched to traditional thermal power generation, most of Japan’s power companies’ earnings have deteriorated because of the higher cost of fire fuel costs. From April to September this year, the profits of three companies such as Chubu Electric Power Co., Ltd. suffered losses. The five companies such as Kansai Electric Power lost regular profits, and the remaining eight companies except China Electric Power had lower profits than last year.

The regular profit of Kansai Electric from April to September was 37.8 billion yen, a decrease of 77% year-on-year. Due to regular inspections of Unit 4 of the Gaobin Nuclear Power Station and Daineng Nuclear Power Station Unit 4, only 4 out of 11 nuclear power plant units normally operated after the end of July. The utilization rate of nuclear power plants was 58.1%, a year-on-year decrease of 15%. Insufficient electricity can only be supplemented by thermal power generation. The thermal power generation costs 273.8 billion yen, an increase of 88 billion yen from the same period last year, which has squeezed profits. As a result of the earthquake, the northeastern power plant that shut down all nuclear power plants lost regular profit from July to September by 72.8 billion yen (the same period last year profit was 68.4 billion yen). After the Central Power shut down the Yoshioka nuclear power station at the request of former Prime Minister Naoto Kan, the fuel cost increased by 128.6 billion yen over the same period of last year, and regular profits turned profitable for the first time. Kyushu Electric Power also suffered losses.

Due to the severe operating conditions, power companies are eagerly looking forward to the restart of nuclear power plants. However, it is still unclear when the nuclear power plant will restart. Once the nuclear power station is out of service for a long period of time, it will inevitably cause the price of electricity to rise. Over time, investment and maintenance costs for power equipment will be reduced, and Japan’s proud power infrastructure will be affected.
