At the event, the virtual fitting mirror became a major attraction, drawing many visitors who wanted to try it out for themselves. The interactive experience allowed users to see how different outfits would look on them in real time, making it a hit among the audience.
The 2017 Xiaomei Waist Technology Conference, which included the Global Mobile Developers Conference and the Artificial Intelligence Summit Forum, continued to generate excitement from last year’s event. The main forum was packed with attendees eager to hear from industry leaders, experts, and innovators discussing the latest trends in AI and mobile technology.
"Black technology" is set to expand beyond Guangzhou and reach a global audience. Zhang Jianwei, director of the Institute of Multimodal Technology at Hamburg University and member of the Hamburg Academy of Sciences, emphasized that the current stage of weak artificial intelligence must integrate with industries such as the Internet, manufacturing, healthcare, and education. He praised Guangzhou's strong foundation in these sectors and highlighted the city's IAB (Internet, AI, Big Data) plan as a strategic move for future development. "The next step is to seize the opportunity for cross-industry integration," he said.
Zhang’s team has established a technology company in the Guangzhou Development Zone, focusing on passive walking robots. They have partnered with Daan Genes, a local biotech firm, to leverage its medical sales network for product distribution. "This robot moves naturally, consumes less energy, and can walk up to 140 kilometers on a single charge. It recently attracted a lot of attention at a smart equipment exhibition, especially among elderly visitors," he shared. The product is now in the mold-making phase, and the team hopes to launch it globally, starting from Guangzhou.
This project exemplifies the convergence of AI and the biomedical industry. According to Wang Jianya, president of Nokia Bell, companies like Cisco, Huawei, and ZTE have invested heavily in Guangzhou due to its strong industrial base in transportation, energy, education, and healthcare. The potential for IoT applications in these vertical markets is promising.
Chen Yongzheng, vice president of Hon Hai Group, added an exciting dimension to Guangzhou’s IAB vision. "Image data is being widely used in smart life and production. We are now exploring 8K resolution, and the 5G ecosystem is taking shape in Guangzhou." The Foxconn 10.5-generation Full-Ecology Industrial Park, with a total investment of 61 billion yuan, broke ground in Zengcheng this year, focusing on producing 8K panels. Chen explained that 8K clarity is 4.3 times greater than human visual perception, offering more detailed and reliable image data. 5G will ensure fast transmission of this data in the future.
Another highlight of the conference was the use of voice recognition technology. At the opening ceremony and main forum, Sogou provided real-time Chinese-English translations of guest speakers’ speeches, enhancing communication and showcasing the power of AI. This year, HKUST introduced more advanced voice recognition systems. Du Lan, senior vice president of HKUST, stated, "The era of voice-based human-computer interaction is coming." She believes AI will become as essential as electricity and water within 5 to 10 years.
HKUST has also made significant progress in AI applications, including an AI-powered "intellectual assistant" that performed well in the National Practitioner Qualification Examination. Du Lan emphasized that these assistants have strong knowledge storage and reasoning capabilities, capable of analyzing complex medical cases. With HKUST's South China headquarters in Guangzhou, the university is committed to developing AI-driven medical solutions and aims to make Guangzhou a model city for smart healthcare.
Xiaomi showcased its first AI speaker, which uses voice technology to interact with users. When people say “Little Lovemates,†the speaker wakes up and plays music or controls the radio based on commands. Cui Baoqiu, chief architect at Xiaomi, noted that the product became popular because it understands user needs. "It’s not just a speaker—it’s an intelligent assistant and a smart home control center."
Smart speakers are no longer limited to tech giants like Google, Apple, and Microsoft. This year, Himalayan FM launched its own AI speaker, “Xiaoya.†Li Haibo, vice president of Himalayan FM, said that the goal is to capture the voice interface market. "Xiaoya represents our physical presence, but the core idea is to extend user engagement through voice interactions rather than just selling devices."
