Ericsson Huawei confronts Africa's first 900MHz 3G network

According to the agreement between both parties, Ericsson will be responsible for the access and transmission of the network, which will be launched in the second quarter of this year. In addition, the leading features developed by Ericsson and the optimization of the GSM spectrum have freed up the 3.8MHz spectrum for the deployment of the 3G network on the 900MHz deployment.

According to C114, in January this year, Huawei announced that its UMTS900 solution has been successfully deployed on the MTN Ghana network. The main use is Huawei's fourth-generation base station 3900 series, the system supports 4.2MHz bandwidth to provide UMTS services, while seamlessly connecting with the existing GSM network. At that time, MTN reportedly planned to use Huawei's UMTS900 solution to expand its 3.5G network coverage to more rural areas.

And Ericsson announced that the experiment was completed on the main remote equipment of Ericsson RBS 3418 that has been deployed by MTN Ghana.

Lars Linden, President of Ericsson's Sub-Saharan Africa Region, said that MTN Ghana is able to develop voice, video and high-speed data through the existing Ericsson 3G wireless access network and the UMTS network operating in the 900MHz band Calls, and operators will also benefit from "using a network with the lowest total cost of ownership for all services."

MTN Ghana CTO Eben Albertyn (Eben Albertyn) said that Ericsson has provided MTN Ghana with continued development of network coverage in local and many rural and remote areas, providing voice and data services to an ever-increasing number of users.

For suppliers, maintaining a long-term and good cooperative relationship with MTN is crucial for developing business in Africa. MTN is the largest mobile operator in Africa. As of the end of September 2009, its users reached 1084.66 million. In addition, it is also a sponsor of the 2010 South Africa World Cup, with exclusive mobile content rights in Africa and the Middle East, and will launch exclusive mobile content to users in 21 countries during the event.

According to a report by the GSM Association (GSMA), the coverage of each base station of UMTS 900 has increased by 44% (urban areas) and 119% (rural areas) compared to UMTS 2100 (operating in the 2.1 GHz band). This is mainly due to the propagation characteristics of the low frequency band, and directly leads to lower operator capital expenditures (C114 Note: CAPEX, mainly network construction costs) and enhanced mobility benefits. Operators preparing to replace their GSM network provide a new option with better service capabilities.
