Intel is betting on artificial intelligence to buy and defend dominance

Intel sees artificial intelligence as the next big growth opportunity this year, but it has acquired two new small companies. The key to their success is service.

Intel is a semiconductor company that produces chips, but in the past year, Intel was looking for industrial engineering and researching brain neuroscience experts to help Intel transition.

On the morning of November 18th, this correspondent interviewed Seattle CEOs of two companies that Intel acquired last year. One was Gayle Sheppard, CEO of Saffron Technology, and the other was Naveen Rao, CEO of Nervana Systems.

Gayle Sheppard's bank is an industrial project. "The reason I started my business was not related to artificial intelligence." She said that her family operates chemical plants in the southern United States. When she first started working, she studied every day. How did she find out? The most efficient way to build factories and manage factories.

“I've been researching how to make the best decisions throughout my life,” she said. At the time, she would examine various kinds of information, such as the weather and even the external traffic conditions, how it would affect the progress of building a factory, like the previous day. When it rains, the progress of the second day may slow down.

She said, "I started to build a system to examine all kinds of unrelated information that seems to be unrelated to each other." Over the past decade or so, she and a group of experts at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) have developed a method. Can teach computers to learn the human decision-making model, for example, learn to judge whether two things are related, is there a causal relationship or similarity.

Her logic is, when you constantly "feed" data to computers, computers learn to determine what is not seen in the suspicious phenomenon, what happened, what will happen next? On one occasion, Florida law enforcement agencies raided drug trafficking groups and handed over data from 80 different sources to her system. As a result, it turned out that people who seemed to be irrelevant "would happen to be in one place." Machines, which club happened to "join", helped the rookie police to significantly shorten the time to solve the case.

Her system, regarded as the rival of IBM's artificial intelligence system Watson, was acquired by Intel this year and became a weapon to attack the corporate market.

Naveen Rao, the CEO of another company, was even more special. He had a PhD in neuroscience and was able to perform brain surgery. After getting his PhD, he went to Silicon Valley to create an artificial intelligence startup.

"I was very interested in the human brain from high school." He pointed to my computer and said, "At that time, I knew that the energy consumed by the human brain is equivalent to 20 watts of electricity, probably only for your laptop. Half; but the human brain is much more powerful than a laptop."

He took the human brain as a computer researcher. He took a degree in electrical engineering from Duke University. After earning money in the technology industry, he returned to Brown University to study brain neuroscience. His most impressive thing was that he had replaced one For 15 years, he attached his brainwaves to the robotic arm. "He can use the brain to directly control the robotic arm and give him a glass of water." He recalls, at that moment, "He smiled and cried on his face again, I will never I can't forget it.”
