According to sources close to this partnership, the two companies are working together in the field of power batteries. In recent years, Apple and CATL have maintained a professional relationship. CATL, which was spun off from its parent company's ATL division in 2011, has quickly established itself as a leading player in the global automotive battery market. Its founder, Zeng Qinghong, along with other early employees, previously worked at ATL. This connection suggests a deep understanding between the two companies, particularly in the realm of advanced battery technologies.
Last month, during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), CEO Tim Cook mentioned that Apple was focusing heavily on autonomous driving systems. He emphasized that this technology represents a crucial component of future AI-driven projects. While Cook didn't explicitly discuss Apple's car ambitions, his comments reignited speculation about the company's plans in the automotive sector.

Unlike BYD's vertically integrated approach, CATL focuses exclusively on supplying power batteries to various automakers. CATL's success can also be attributed to China's aggressive push for renewable energy and electric vehicles, which has created a fertile environment for innovation and investment.
The rumored partnership between Apple and CATL has fueled speculation that Apple may resume its efforts to build an electric vehicle. Over the past few years, Apple's automotive journey has seen several twists and turns. Initially launching the iOSintheCar initiative in 2013, Apple later rebranded it as CarPlay and formed alliances with numerous automakers. In 2015, Apple ramped up recruitment efforts, establishing a dedicated team for autonomous vehicle development under the codename "Project Titan." However, by late 2016, Apple shifted focus away from vehicle production, opting instead to collaborate with traditional automakers on autonomous systems.
Despite this change in direction, Cook's recent remarks have reignited interest in Apple's potential return to the automotive space.
