Apple and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), also known as Ningde Times, are collaborating on a project under a confidentiality agreement. Sources close to this partnership have informed CBN that the two companies are working together in the field of electric vehicle batteries. In the realm of Apple and CATL, these entities are well-acquainted with each other. CATL originated from the power battery division of ATL, a subsidiary of New Energy Technology Co. (ATL), which is the world's leading supplier of batteries for consumer electronics. CATL was established in 2011, and its founders, including Chairman Zeng Yiqun and President Huang Shilin, among others, were former executives at ATL. Just a month ago, during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple CEO Tim Cook told U.S. media that Apple was "focusing on automated driving systems," considering this to be a crucial core technology, nearly the "mother of all AI projects." However, he refrained from discussing Apple's specific car projects. Apple has not released any information regarding its collaboration with CATL, and CATL has chosen not to comment publicly. Wu Hui, Director of CCID Consulting's new energy department, told the First Financial Daily that if Apple and CATL are indeed collaborating on electric vehicle batteries, it may signal Apple's intent to continue developing its own vehicles. After all, the power battery is one of the key components in autonomous electric cars. In recent years, CATL has seen rapid growth in the vehicle battery sector, competing with Panasonic and BYD to become one of the top three global suppliers of automotive batteries. According to data from the China Chemical and Physical Power Industry Association, BYD and CATL ranked first and second in China's power battery shipments in 2016, with 7.4 GWh and 6.7 GWh respectively. Both companies saw annual sales of lithium-ion batteries surpass 10 billion yuan last year, with BYD reaching 15.26 billion yuan and CATL at 14 billion yuan. Unlike BYD's vertically integrated self-sufficiency model, CATL, which has not ventured into new energy vehicle production, focuses on supplying power batteries to multiple car manufacturers. Besides strong ties with BMW, CATL also supplies power batteries to major domestic car brands like SAIC, BAIC, Changan, and Geely. Leveraging China's push for new energy vehicle development, CATL has expanded its presence in the battery market and plans to accelerate its growth through the capital markets. The rumored partnership between Apple and CATL has sparked industry speculation that Apple may continue pursuing its automotive ambitions. Over the past few years, Apple's journey toward creating a car has been marked by twists and turns. In 2013, Apple announced its entry into the automotive industry, launching the iOSintheCar program and completing the CarPlay trademark application in November of the same year. By early 2014, Apple rebranded iOSintheCar as the CarPlay system. At the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz showcased a C-Class model equipped with the CarPlay system. Other car manufacturers like Ferrari, BMW, GM, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Nissan, and Toyota also demonstrated integration with various models and CarPlay. In 2015, Apple ramped up recruitment efforts, offering high salaries to poach talent from traditional car companies, establishing its own car R&D team, and naming its project the "Titan Plan." At the WWDC Developer Conference in June 2016, Apple announced updates to its CarPlay system, set to integrate seamlessly with the new Apple Maps and Siri. While anticipation built for Apple's disruptive new energy vehicle offerings, Apple announced in October 2016 that it would abandon direct vehicle manufacturing, shifting focus instead to collaborations with traditional automakers and concentrating on the development of autonomous driving systems. However, Cook's recent statements have reignited speculation across Wall Street and Silicon Valley that Apple might ultimately produce its own vehicles. Despite numerous setbacks and shifts in strategy, Apple's persistent interest in the automotive sector continues to intrigue both investors and tech enthusiasts alike.
