In a recent report, it was revealed that the location data collected by fitness apps can offer valuable features to help users track and improve their movement patterns. However, this same data has also raised serious security concerns, as it inadvertently exposed sensitive military information. For example, detailed maps of restricted military areas were visible on public platforms.
UCA analyst Nathan Ruser discovered that Strava, a popular fitness tracking app, displayed workout routes used by military personnel and intelligence agents in high-security zones, including U.S. bases in Afghanistan and Syria. The app’s global map showed activity paths that could reveal critical operational details.
Other locations flagged include the Falkland Islands Air Force Base in the UK, a hidden CIA facility in Somalia, and even the highly classified U.S. Area 51. Additionally, data from Russian military sites was also found on the platform. While many of these locations are not entirely secret, the level of detail shared could expose sensitive information such as where soldiers live within the base or which roads are most frequently traveled.
In Afghanistan, the data didn’t just show internal movements—it could also indicate patrol routes or supply lines, potentially putting troops at risk. Strava does remind users that they can disable location sharing and keep certain activities private, but many users remain unaware of how much data is actually being shared and the potential consequences of doing so publicly.
Not all fitness apps provide open maps that allow for easy access to such data, but Strava’s case highlights a growing concern: even seemingly harmless data can have serious implications. This incident serves as a reminder that public data can sometimes contain information that should remain confidential. It may also lead to stricter policies on smartphone use among military personnel or increased training to ensure that sensitive locations stay protected.
