Marvell and OSRAM Launch Two-Color LED Downlight Reference Design

Marvell and Osram OptoSemiconductors, global leaders in integrated chip solutions, announce the introduction of the Marvell-Osram two-color LED downlight reference design to further enhance mass market adoption of high quality and affordable LED lighting applications.

This design is based on OSRAM's high performance LEDs and Marvell's highly integrated, advanced driver ICs, which require high performance, high color rendering index (CRI) LED lighting fixtures for professional and commercial lighting applications. The use of this reference design can greatly reduce engineering complexity, making it easier for lighting manufacturers to develop higher quality LED luminaires and deliver them to end users at a more affordable price.

The design uses OSRAM's Brilliant Mix LED and Marvell® 88EM8801 Led Driver IC to provide an unparalleled solution for color mixing and control of EQ-white and amber LEDs for higher color rendering index and efficacy. Marvell's 88EM8801 LED driver IC integrates dual-channel driver circuitry and a variety of built-in digital control functions to address the complex design challenges often faced by device manufacturers and reduce bill of materials costs.

Osram said that if standard LEDs are used, current color mixing techniques are unlikely to achieve LED lighting with high efficiency and high color rendering index. The different luminous flux characteristics of EQ-white and amber LEDs result in complex design challenges associated with operating temperatures. With Marvell's innovative LED IC drivers and OSRAM's Brilliant Mix technology, device manufacturers can easily develop feedback control systems that compensate for temperature drift for bright, high-performance and energy-efficient lighting applications.

Reference design details:

The Marvell-Osram two-color LED downlight reference design uses the Marvell dual-string smart LED driver IC88EM8801 and the Marvell single-chip system (SoC) microcontroller 88MZ100. The 88EM8801 is the industry's first dual-string smart LED controller chip with Marvell's exclusive The hybrid signal power technology delivers superior lighting performance while maintaining high levels of integration and efficiency. The 88MZ100 microcontroller is the industry's first functionally most integrated SoC, supporting Zig Bee and DALI standards as well as custom lighting applications. With OSRAM's Brilliant-Mix LED color mixing technology, the reference design achieves a CRI of over 90, 30% more efficient than other LEDs on the mass market, and its innovative temperature compensation solves the color point drift problem.
