PI introduces a 150W LED driver with 93% efficiency

Power Integrations, the world's most efficient and longest-lived manufacturer of off-line LED driver ICs, today announced a reference design kit for 150 W 48 V power supplies for LED streetlights and other industrial/infrastructure lighting systems. The driver circuit described in RDR-292 achieves 93% efficiency at 230 VAC input and 91% efficiency at 110 VAC input. This design allows the system to achieve a power factor of 0.97 or higher and a THD of less than 10%, while easily meeting the EN61000-3-2 C standard. Under the same design platform, the power range of the design can be extended to 75 by simply selecting different converter ICs and corresponding device ratios from HiperPFSTM (PFC) and HiperLCSTM (LLC) family members. W to 400 W.
The RDK-292 requires less than 125 components in the design of the driver's PFC, LLC, and standby power circuits, which reduces BOM cost and provides excellent reliability. The design combines Power Integrations' highly integrated HiperPFS power factor correction IC and HiperLCS resonant converter IC to save up to 35 components compared to traditional LLC designs. HiperLCS also allows the use of smaller cores and output filter capacitors than typical LLC designs. In addition, the design uses a QspeedTM hybrid PIN-Schottky diode that significantly reduces diode recovery damage compared to conventional ultra-fast silicon PFC diodes, thereby increasing CCM PFC efficiency.
For lighting fixtures using remote lighting control systems, the design enables high-efficiency standby power functions based on Power Integrations' LinkSwitchTM-TN IC. Adding a CAPZeroTMX Capacitor Discharge IC further saves energy, reducing the no-load power consumption at 264 VAC input to around 800 mW.
