On November 16, 2016, Dongfeng Peugeot unveiled its new 4008 model. This vehicle comes in six different versions, powered by either a 1.6T (350THP) or 1.8T (380THP) engine, with a price range of 18.57 to 27.37 million RMB.

Fast forward to June 8, 2017, when Dongfeng Peugeot introduced its first mid-size seven-seater SUV, the 5008. This model offers seven trim levels with the same 1.6T (350THP) and 1.8T (380THP) engines. The price tag ranges from 18.77 to 27.97 million RMB.
Looking back at the history, the first generation Peugeot 5008 was an MPV based on the PF2 platform, launched in 2009. It was primarily sold in Europe, South America, and Australia, but never officially released in China. The second generation, showcased at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, transformed the MPV into a 7-seater SUV.

Interestingly, there is no Peugeot 4008 outside of China. The model available here is actually the overseas Peugeot 3008, while the older Chinese 3008 has been rebranded as the 4008 to fill the product lineup gap.
When comparing the Peugeot 5008 and 4008, these vehicles are built on the same PSA EMP2 platform, making them essentially siblings. The Peugeot 5008 is larger, measuring 4670/1855/1655mm with a wheelbase of 2840mm, compared to the 4008’s 4510/1850/1662mm and 2730mm wheelbase. As a result, the 5008 is marketed as a mid-size SUV with three rows of seating.
Both vehicles share the same exterior design, interior features, and powertrain, including 1.6T/1.8T turbocharged engines paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. They also use the same suspension setup—a MacPherson strut at the front and a beam-type semi-independent rear suspension.
From a pricing perspective, the Peugeot 5008 and 4008 are priced similarly, meaning they target the same market segment. Together, they aim to capture a significant share of the growing SUV market.
Now, let’s talk about the Peugeot 5008 itself. Despite its strong European design heritage, the 5008 faces challenges in the Chinese market. Its sleek lines and futuristic interior, featuring Peugeot’s “Second-generation i-Cockpit,†give it a modern look. Standard features include LED daytime running lights, LED taillights, paddle shifters, and advanced safety tech like autonomous emergency braking.
However, the 5008 isn’t without its drawbacks. At 4670mm in length, it falls short compared to competitors like the new Haval H6 (4640mm) and mainstream mid-size SUVs, which typically exceed 4800mm. This smaller size limits interior space, particularly in the third row, which feels cramped. Additionally, despite its premium price tag, the 5008 uses a torsion beam rear suspension, a feature that may disappoint buyers looking for a more refined driving experience.
Furthermore, the 5008 is only available in front-wheel drive, which might feel underwhelming for a mid-size SUV. While it excels as a city vehicle, the lack of all-wheel drive diminishes its appeal for those seeking versatility.
In summary, the Peugeot 5008 is a stylish and well-equipped SUV, but its compact size and limited rear seating may deter some buyers. Nevertheless, it remains a competitive option within its price range, offering a unique blend of French design and practicality.
