According to Reuters, many people don't have fond memories of hospitals from their childhood—dark corridors, pale walls, and whispers about the morgue. Even with modern hospital designs today, the pediatric ward still echoes with children's cries, showing that kids often fear hospitals more than adults do. To help ease children’s anxiety and tap into their love for play, an Australian studio called Eness created a glowing interactive wall known as LUMES.
Eness is a multimedia design studio that specializes in 3D projection mapping and motion tracking technology. Their work transforms ordinary spaces into exciting, futuristic environments. This interactive wall was developed in collaboration with architectural firm DesignInc, turning the corridor of Cabrini Hospital’s pediatric ward into a magical, illuminated space.
The interactive wall is positioned at the entrance of the pediatric area and blends seamlessly with the interior. At first glance, it looks like a normal wall. But when you gently touch it, the surface comes alive, revealing a large LED screen filled with colorful visuals. The wall is interactive—children can move and change the images by touching it or even just moving around it, as the system tracks their motions in real time.
The content on the wall features 15 different themes, including nature scenes like growing plants and flying birds, as well as engaging tech elements such as planes taking off and rockets launching. These themes change throughout the day—like owls and the moon only appearing at night, creating a dynamic and immersive experience for children.
The design of the interactive wall is modular, featuring warm wood textures or plexiglass for easy cleaning. Behind the surface, LED lights provide high brightness, making the display visible even in daylight. Multiple modules can be combined to create different shapes and installed on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces, offering versatile applications.
This interactive wall acts like a smart canvas where children can use their fingers and footsteps as brushes, letting them express their creativity. It transforms the cold, sterile environment of a hospital into something vibrant and welcoming. In this setting, sick children may feel more comforted, which could aid in their recovery.
