Hospital wall turns beautiful LED screen kids running with it

According to Reuters, many people don’t have fond childhood memories of hospitals—dark corridors, pale walls, and whispers about the morgue. Even with modern hospital designs today, the pediatric ward is often filled with crying children, showing that kids are more afraid of hospitals than adults. To help ease their fears and bring some fun into the environment, an Australian studio called Eness created a luminous interactive wall called LUMES.

Eness is a multimedia design studio known for using 3D projection and motion tracking technology. Their work transforms everyday spaces into futuristic, immersive experiences. This interactive wall project was developed in collaboration with architectural firm DesignInc, turning the corridor of Cabrini Hospital’s pediatric wing into a glowing, engaging passage.

The interactive wall is located at the entrance to the pediatric area and blends seamlessly with the interior, appearing as a normal wall at first glance. But when you gently touch it, the surface comes alive, revealing a large LED screen. The wall responds to children’s movements—whether they touch it directly or move around it. As they interact, images change and evolve, giving them a sense of control and wonder.

The content on the wall includes 15 different themes, ranging from nature scenes like growing plants and flying birds to exciting tech elements such as planes taking off and rockets launching. These themes appear at different times of the day, like owls and the moon only showing up at night, creating a dynamic and magical experience for the kids.

The wall is designed in modular form, featuring either warm wood or easy-to-clean plexiglass. Behind it, LED lights ensure visibility even in bright daylight. Multiple modules can be combined to create various shapes and installed on walls, ceilings, or other surfaces, offering flexible applications.

This interactive wall acts like a smart canvas where children can use their fingers and footsteps as brushes, letting their imagination run wild. It turns the cold, sterile hospital environment into a vibrant, playful space. I believe that in such a setting, sick children may recover faster and feel more at ease. What do you think?
