The United States is the first to open 5G services in China

In recent reports, it has been revealed that US operators are working on establishing a government-run 5G network. This initiative is expected to launch nationwide 5G services in 2019, potentially putting the US ahead of China in the race for 5G adoption. As part of this effort, Qualcomm is set to release 5G network chips by year-end, which will pave the way for the first 5G-enabled smartphones to hit the market. According to U.S. media outlets, the Trump administration is considering creating a government-operated 5G infrastructure to boost the country’s position in the global 5G landscape and counter the rapid growth of China’s 5G industry. Although officials have confirmed the idea, the plan is still under discussion and may be delayed by at least six months. While the government's role is being explored, private telecom companies are also moving quickly. For example, Sprint, one of the leading U.S. carriers, plans to roll out 5G services in the first half of next year. This makes them the first in the country to offer 5G, even a full year before T-Mobile. Sprint’s CEO, Marcelo Claure, emphasized that the company is upgrading its cell towers to support large-scale 5G transitions, aiming to deploy the technology as swiftly as possible. Moreover, the CEO mentioned that Qualcomm will soon release 5G-compatible chips, which will lead to the availability of 5G smartphones by mid-2019. Early adopters in the U.S. could gain access to these services before the end of the year, giving American users a head start in experiencing the next generation of mobile connectivity.
