New findings: short-wave UV light can slow the spread of the flu

It has been widely reported that hospitals and laboratories frequently use ultraviolet (UV) light to eliminate harmful bacteria. However, this method comes with a significant downside: it can be harmful to humans. As a result, UV sterilization is typically only performed in unoccupied spaces such as empty operating rooms or lab hoods. In recent years, researchers have discovered that certain shorter wavelengths of UV light—specifically in the UVC range—might not pose a risk to human health. Based on this theory, scientists are working to develop a new tool that could be safely used in public areas like schools, airplanes, food processing facilities, and even in operating rooms and labs. The goal is to reduce the spread of infectious diseases in these environments. UV light works by breaking down the molecular bonds that hold bacterial DNA together, effectively killing them. The most commonly used wavelength for disinfection is 254 nm, which falls within the UVC category. However, this type of UV light can penetrate the skin and eyes, increasing the risk of serious conditions such as skin cancer and cataracts. To address this issue, physicist David Brenner from Columbia University Medical Center in New York led a team of researchers who spent four years testing far-ultraviolet light, specifically at a wavelength of 222 nm. This type of light does not penetrate the eye or the outer layer of the skin, making it potentially safer for human exposure. Their experiments showed that far-UV light was effective at killing surface bacteria without harming laboratory mice. In addition, a study published on bioRxiv on December 28, 2017, described how Brenner and his team tested whether this short-wave UV light could help tackle common public health issues, such as airborne bacteria. In one experiment, they aerosolized the flu virus in a controlled chamber and then exposed it to 222 nm UV light. A control group was left untreated. Afterward, they collected liquid samples from the chamber and introduced them to dog kidney cells that are susceptible to influenza. The results showed that the untreated samples infected the cells, while those exposed to the UV light did not. Shawn Gibbs, an industrial hygienist and researcher at Indiana University School of Public Health, believes that if these findings are confirmed, short-wave UV light could significantly impact disease prevention. He has studied the effectiveness of UV disinfection methods in various settings, emphasizing its potential for broader application in public health.
