A survey of 600 corporate and end-user respondents' perceptions of changes in access control best practices and their significance reveals the ability of organizations to respond to increasingly dangerous and costly security threats now and in the future.

The HID Global survey details the current security breaches and the resulting losses, including:
1. Only 37% of users perform annual security assessments, and most users do not hire third parties to test their existing access control systems. This means that the user does not perform their own security audits, does not conduct intrusion training internally, or does not test their own systems at all.
2. More than 50% of respondents did not upgrade their systems last year, and more than 20% of respondents did not upgrade their systems in the past three years.
3. 75% of end users consider password protected cards to be important. In addition, most respondents believe that magnetic stripe cards and proximity cards provide adequate security even though magnetic stripe cards and proximity cards are easily replicated.
4. 75% of respondents indicated that state-of-the-art security technology is important or very important. But half of the respondents said they did not implement these technologies better or did not implement them at all. HID Global believes that the current perception of access control will have an impact on the adoption of future technologies.
