China Unicom accelerates the withdrawal of 2G Unicom 2G reasons to close 2G

According to the internal communication from China Unicom, China Unicom's provincial company is carrying out 2G base station declining and retiring and changing activities, and plans to shut down 101 low-traffic base stations. In order to develop 4G, China Unicom began to accelerate the withdrawal of 2G.

In this regard, China Unicom confirmed the news to the Beijing Business Daily reporter. In fact, at the end of January this year, China Unicom has been actively deploying 2G networks in many provinces and cities, and requires the market line to strictly prohibit the development of 2G services. According to internal news, China Unicom's 2G customers account for about 2% of the total number of customers. In 2017, the number of Unicom users reached 280 million, and the current number of 2G customers is about 5 million. In other words, once China Unicom 2G fully surrenders 5 million users, it will not be able to make calls.

According to the analysis, China Unicom has shut down 2G, which may include three reasons: First, in order to transfer spectrum resources, China Unicom will shift the resources of 2G networks to 4G, which will benefit the industry; second, this will greatly reduce maintenance. Cost; Third, last year, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a document to allow operators to deploy NB-IoT systems in the GSM frequency band. Later, China Mobile built a 4G-based NB-IoT network on the original 2G frequency band. Therefore, 900Mhz deploying 2G networks 1800Mhz is regarded as a high-quality frequency band, which is also a resource that Unicom urgently needs. For these reasons, China Unicom chose to shut down the 2G network.

However, closing 2G is not a domestic precedent, and many foreign operators have closed 2G networks. Faced with a series of global 2G network operations, it also indicates that 2G communication is slowly withdrawing from the historical stage. However, it is reported that at the end of 2017, China still has 1.57 million 2G base stations, 290 million 2G users, and massive IoT devices that rely more on 2G networks.
