Global microgrid enabling technology spending totaled nearly $112 billion in 2026

US market research firm Navigant Research recently released a report that by 2026, the cumulative global spending on microgrid enabling technology will be close to $112 billion.

Peter Asmus, chief research analyst at Navigant Research, said: "The microgrid represents a key component of the emerging energy cloud, with the advantage of grid self-healing capabilities and renewable energy integration." By 2026, biomass, cogeneration Production (CHP), diesel, fuel cells, hydropower, solar photovoltaics and wind energy will account for the largest share of microgrid spending, and serve as the backbone of the microgrid value proposition, maximizing on-site power generation capacity. From a global perspective, cogeneration is the first choice for microgrid applications in 2017, with 655 MW installed throughout the year, followed by solar PV (392 MW) and diesel (385 MW). However, by 2026, the deployment of microgrid-enabled technologies will change. It is expected that the installation of microgrid for solar photovoltaic power plants is expected to jump to 3,786 MW, followed by microgrid energy storage applications, about 3,292 MW.
