For EX8200 customers seeking 40 / 100G Ethernet and / or SDN programmability, the EX9200 is a complete core replacement, and EX8200 line cards are not forward compatible with EX9200.
DhriTIman Dasgupta, senior director of product marketing and strategy at Juniper Networks, said: "EX8200 has been successful in the lower density market, but we do not have a very high speed density solution."
Dasgupta said that Juniper Networks currently has no plans to provide EX8200 to EX9200 migration or discount transactions, but it is working hard.
The EX9200 is an MX edge router based on Juniper Networks, not an EX switch. It runs the same One / Trio ASIC as the MX, and the specifications are the same, but the chassis, line card, switch architecture, routing engine, and software are different.
Between the EX9200 and the MX router, only the power supply, fan tray, air filter, and power cord are interchangeable components.
Juniper Networks chose the MX technology instead of the EX switch platform for the EX9200, mainly because of the programmability of the Trio ASIC, which the EX platform cannot provide.
He also claimed that, except for multi-terabit switching capacity, the EX8200 was never designed for 40 / 100G Ethernet. However, customers who purchase EX8200 may think it can be used for 100G Ethernet. For this reason, Juniper Networks may continue to invest in and support EX8200 and help migrate to EX9200.
The launch of EX9200 also makes us question the future development of QFabric interconnect, which is the core of Juniper Networks QFabric single-layer data center architecture switching system. It is reported that QFabric will continue to be the leading platform for Juniper's single-layer architecture, but only for 10G deployments, although the platform supports 40G interfaces.
Dasgupta said. Most QFabric top rack switches (called "nodes" in the QFabric architecture) already have 40G capped links.
QFabric will be positioned as a replacement for the Cisco Nexus 7 000, while EX9200 competitors will include the data center Nexus 7000 M series, Cisco's Catalyst 6500E and HP's 7500/10500/12500 switches.
It is unclear what products Juniper Networks will use to counter Cisco's new Nexus 6000 40G data center switches, but they may "come against" by combining EX9200 with QFabric's top rack node.
Dasgupta stated that Juniper Networks is still committed to the continuous development of a single-layer architecture and the market has a demand for predictable low-latency switching. He said that Juniper Networks will sign "full" QFabric (node ​​plus interconnect) contracts with several customers every quarter.
"In 10 years, every data center will need an architecture like QFabric," Dasgupta said. "With this architecture, you will be able to ensure application performance SLA."
He declined to comment on whether QFabric will support 100G.
It is reported that if only QFabric's top rack nodes reach 100G, they will connect the EX9200 core for a two-tier data center network. Juniper Networks is positioning the EX9200 as the best platform for this purpose, combining EX series and / or QFabric 1G / 10G top rack switches.
